More about Rodero

Carmelo Rodero comes from a family of vine growers from the town of Pedrosa de Duero, in Burgos. He belongs to the fourth generation of winemakers. His great-grandparents made wine in the old, classic presses, until the cooperative Cooperativa Vinícola de Pedrosa de Duero was founded by his grandparents. In line with this trajectory, Carmelo Rodero started to cultivate vines that belonged to his family for a few years, until in 1990 he went his own way, cultivating 50 hectares of vineyards. He started by selling his grapes to the mythical winery Bodega Vega Sicilia, which he did for 14 years. At the same time, he also started to make his own wines, with the first harvest taking place in 1991.

Currently, Carmelo Rodero, always with the support of his wife, Elena, continuous his entrepreneurial path thanks to his daughters, Beatriz and María, who are quite involved in the project. Beatriz, his eldest daughter, is an agricultural engineer specialised in viticulture. She is also an oenologist graduated from the University of Bordeaux (France), and she is in charge of the winery’s technical direction.

History of the winery

The winery is located on the road to Boada, in the neighbourhood of Pedrosa de Duero. However, the winery’s origins were at the vineyard. Carmelo started to purchase land in the surroundings of Pedrosa de Duero, he planted them with vines and left the cultivation of cereal to a side. He currently has 120 hectares of vineyard in Pedrosa de Duero, the southmost area of Burgos, located between 750 and 850 metres above seal level. This area has a specific climate, with seasons that have a slight Atlantic and continental influence. This distribution provides an extreme and specific climate, which has an influence on the features of his grapes and, therefore, of his wines. The temperatures are mild, except for the months from December to March, where the low temperatures and the strong winds mark a very cold season.

Summer are hot and the annual rainfall is of around 400 l/m2. Therefore, we can say that rain is a scarce resource and that it greatly influences the cultivation of vines. The land is clayey, although there are some calcareous areas. The soils are poor in organic matter and slightly alkaline, with boulders, limestone and sand. The plantation density is of around 2,500 vines per hectare, planted in vase-shape and in espalier. The first type of vine training is more classic and enclosed to protect the grapes; the second type, which is more dynamic, achieves a wider distribution of the leaves. One of Carmelo Rodero’s advantages is that the winery makes wine with their own grapes. Part of the vineyards have been in the family for years and they have the purest clone of the native Tempranillo, also known as Tinta Fina. All the vineyards that have been planted in the farm have been grafted with this clone.

On the other hand, the winery’s facilities are equipped with the latest technology, which allows them to take care of the grapes, always using gravity and with no pumping. This way, they combine the traditional methods with state-of-the-art technology.

Work philosophy

Since 1990, Carmelo Rodero has given particular importance to the raw material: the vineyard. The vines are cared for during their entire growth cycle, with green pruning when the vines need it, or removing lateral shoots (desniete) by hand when the grapes need more energy from the plant. Carmelo has known his vines for over 40 years, and he knows how to listen what they need.

When they arrive at the winery, the grapes go through a selection table, where they choose the best bunches and they remove the possible impurities.

The wines are made by plots, individually for each variety, carrying out a meticulous, orderly and clean work. This way, they achieve a low interference in the natural winemaking processes. At the winery, they carry out a daily tasting of the wines from the different deposits, which allows them to monitor the evolution of the wines, step by step, taking care of the smallest details. Only those wines that have the best palate are selected for the ageing in French oak barrels. Here, they will rest for the time they need, with manual racking that do not interrupt their physical and chemical processes. They also use the gravity system, which is equipped with a rotating platform where the deposits turn to “receive” the grapes. Through a mechanism of IFOs, they manage to extract the maximum potential of the grapes without having to use a pumping system.

Wines from Carmelo Rodero

Below is a list of the wines produced by Carmelo Rodero:

Carmelo Rodero Tinto Cosecha is a young wine. It is made 100% with Tinto Fino from the winery’s vineyards. This wine goes through a classic production process, with destemmed grapes without crushing. This wine is very lively and it has a magnificent youth, with rich aromatic shades and nuances of ripe, healthy, fresh grapes. It also has a small touch of flowers, simple but very attractive. It is balanced and strong in the mouth, tasty, with nervo. Tannins of a great quality and a good acidity, with a fresh and generous character of ripe fruit.

Carmelo Rodero 9 Meses is a varietal wine of Tinto Fino from the winery’s own vines, which are between 5 and 20 years old. This wine is aged for 9 months in French and American oak barrels. On the nose, it is intense, with aromas of flowers and red wild fruit, assembled with lactic hints and vanilla, typical of its rest in wood. It’s mid-palate is ample, elegant, persistent and silky.

Carmelo Rodero Crianza is made with Tinto Fino (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) from the winery’s own vineyards, which are over 15 years old. This wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for a minimum of 15 months, with racking every 3 months. Its varietal aromas are the first ones to be tasted, either accompanied by a soft roasted note or combined with its final touch of liquorice. In the mouth, it is structured and meaty, with an excellent bouquet that remains in the retroolfaction. It has an intense flavour, very well balanced, long and generous in taste sensations.

Carmelo Rodero Reserva is made with Tinto Fino (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) from the winery’s own vineyards, which are over 30 years old. This wine is aged for 15 months in French oak and 6 months in American oak, with the corresponding racking. On the nose, it has great subtleness, with aromas of ripe fruit that are very well paired with the ageing in the wood. It has aromas of spices (vanilla, cinnamon) and the stimulating toasted and coffee aromas. Very meaty in the mouth, with a long finish and a balanced acidity. The ripe and soft tannins are harmonious, filling the palate with pleasant sensations.

Pago de Valtarreña is a varietal of Tinto Fino from the vineyards of the family farm of Valtarreña, which is between 45 and 55 years old. Due to its genetic features and its special microclimate, these vineyards produce an exceptional ripening of its tannins. The vineyard is cultivated in vase-shape and espalier, with a yield of only 3,500 kg per hectare. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel deposits, and the malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Then, the wine is aged for 24 months in 225-litre French oak barrels of a selected grain, and with an average age of a year and a half. This red wine is sweet and powerful, and soft and silky at the same time. On the nose, the notes of black season fruit blend with the roasted nuances, as well as leather and coffee, along with spicy aromas, of great intensity and high persistence. In the mouth, it is very meaty, sapid, silky, with structure, fresh, and with great balance. It has notes of bramble, milky coffee sweets, shady forest, pipe tobacco, minerals.

Carmelo Rodero “TSM” is made with Tinto Fino (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Merlot (15%), from the winery’s vineyards that are over 40 years old. This wine is aged for at least 18 months, in 100% French oak barrels that are under 2 years. It is complex on the nose, with black fruit, mineral nuances, and toasted, roasted and balsamic notes. In the mouth, it is powerful, tasty, with a good structure and weight of the fruit. Balances, with an elegant mid-palate, and fine tannins marked by a lactic and balsamic finish. It is surprising thanks to its exceptional complexity, its structure and elegance. Its shows the maturity of this winery, who has managed to concentrate the power, elegance, fruit expression and the excellent freshness in this wine.
