More about Gran Feudo

What is now known as Grupo Chivite is the history of the Chivitefamily. A history that dates back to 1647 in a family-run winery that was located on the street Calle Caballeros, in the middle of Cintruénigo, when they were known as great traders of bulk wines. Since then, and up until now, the eleven generations of the Chivite family have advocated a way of life linked to the land, the vineyard and the wine. In 1860, they began exporting to France, but it was not until 1872 that Claudio Chivite Francés started to build the winery La Cascajera, in its actual location, leaving the family winery on Calle Caballeros. These were the origins of what is now Bodegas Gran Feudo, with its first harvest of Gran Feudo launched on the market in 1975. In 1948, he renovated the family winery, and in the 80s of last century he started their great expansion. He bought the hectares of the current Señorío de Arínzano, a winery in Tierra Estella (Navarra), designed and built by architect Rafael Moneo. At the end on the 90s, he bought the Riojan brand Viña Salceda, which he used to make his first foray in La Rioja. In 2001, the winery started its geographical expansion towards Ribera del Duero, where they bought 50 hectares in La Horra, in Ribera del Duero, with a vineyard that was first planted in 1999. Here, they cultivate the varieties Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2009, they continued their expansion period and they reached denomination of origin Rueda, with the launch of their brand Baluarte Verdejo. However, in 2012, and after selling their winery of single-vineyard wines (vinos de pago), Propiedad de Arínzano, to the Russian group SPI, based in Luxembourg, the Chivite Group was restructured into three companies: Viña Salceda, located in Elciego, Rioja Alavesa; Gran Feudo in Navarra, and the mother house J. Chivite Family Estates, that makes wines from the ranges Chivite Colección 125 and Chivite Finca de Villatuerta. They also continue to distribute the Taittinger champagne in our country. Part of this business reorganisation is the recent appointment of Diego Talavera as Director General of the Group; he joined in 2016. Talavera has developed all his professional activity in the wine industry focusing on the commercial and management areas. Trained in Business Management in BMS (Montpellier and San José, USA), he started his career in Bodegas y Bebidas as Area Manager for Scandinavia, Benelux, Switzerland, USA and Africa. In 2001, he joined the internationals area of Bodegas Torres where he manages its duty free channel worldwide and is responsible for exports. In 2007, he joined the team of Bodegas Murviedro, first as the Commercial and Marketing Manager, and later on as the Director General.

The Winery

In 1955, Julián Chivite Marco, who has taken over the winery in 1930, started to make bottled wines and established the technical bases of the modern oenology that today governs the family business. They have stainless steel, temperature control, and a spectacular park of 13,000 French and American oak barrels. At Gran Feudo there are also committed to the environment. Therefore, in 2008 they renewed their bottles to reduce the amount of glass they used. This has also allowed them to drastically reduce the consumption of energy and the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere. Their energy supply is also 100% from renewable sources.

Wines from Gran Feudo

Gran Feudo produces, under D.O. Navarra , a classic range of wines, apart from three wines that are representative of Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda. They also produce the range Gran Feudo Edición, designed exclusively for the hotel, restaurant and catering sector (HORECA) in Spain. Below we present you with wines from Gran Feudo:

Gran Feudo - D.O. Navarra

The vineyards from which the grapes come from, from the warm clays of Cintruénigo and Corella, produce the varieties Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and small-grain Muscatel, with plants that are 30 years old on average.

Gran Feudo Chardonnay is a varietal of Chardonnay, from their own vineyards located in Marcilla, and produced as a young wine. On the nose it is intense, fresh and varietal. The aromas of citrus fruits and white fruits prevail. Fresh entrance in the mouth, balanced acidity, with prevailing fruit notes. Long, fresh and persistent finish.

Gran Feudo Rosado is made mainly from Grenache. This wine has an attractive strawberry colour, intense, lively and bright, with aroma. Quite fruity (strawberry, raspberry), clean and expressive. In the mouth, it is fresh and fruity, with volume, well balanced, long and with a strawberry aftertaste.

Gran Feudo Roble is made from Tempranillo and it remains in American oak barrels for at least three months. It has an intense aroma, clean and very fruity. With aromas of red fruits and liquorice. In the mouth, it is very fresh, with a balanced acidity, and a pleasant and long fruity finish.

Gran Feudo Crianza is made from Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is aged for at least 12 months in American oak barrels. An aroma with a good acidity, with black fruit tones and well-assembled wood from its ageing. Soft and clean entrance in the mouth, with an ample mid-palate. Well structured and balanced, with well-integrated tannins, and a pleasant and long finish.

Gran Feudo Reserva is made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, from the vineyards located in Marcilla and Aberin. It is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels. Intense and fine aroma, with notes of black fruit with spiced and roasted touches from the fine oak. A tasty and powerful entrance in the mouth, with an elegant, round and structured mid-palate, and a pleasant and persistent finish.

Gran Feudo Viñas Viejas Reserva is made from Tempranillo and Grenache, from very old vineyards that are harvested and selected by hand. The grapes come from their own vineyards "Hoya de Lobos", planted in 1954; "Clavijas", planted in 1940, and "El Paso", planted in 1960. They are located in Cintruénigo and Corella. This wine is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels. Intense, complex and fine aroma, with notes of ripe black fruit and a smoky background of oak. Intense in the mouth, wide and tasty, with a balanced, complex mid-palate. It has quality tannins and well-integrated wood. An aftertaste of ripe fruit combined with soft tannins of its ageing in the barrel.

Gran Feudo Blanco Dulce is made with small-grain Muscatel. It offers a golden yellow colour with some green reflections. On the nose, it is intense, fine, complex, with aromas of fresh Muscatel grapes, notes of citrus and flowers. Ample palate, with a smooth and perfectly-balanced mid-palate. It has a good acidity and an elegant aftertaste with citrus notes.

Gran Feudo - D.O.Ca. Rioja

The grapes used to make this wine come from vineyards selected for their balance, both regarding production and vegetative expression. The are grown in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. Most of the plots are located on the slight slopes that connect the imposing limestone cliff of the mountain range Sierra de Cantabria with the Ebro river. The southern orientation of these slopes allows a maximum use of solar radiation. Therefore, the ripening of the grapes is better than what normally corresponds to these latitudes. This way they achieve wines with much more body, but without giving up the natural freshness of Rioja wines.

Gran Feudo Tempranillo is made at the premises that the property has in Elciego. It is an attractive cherry-coloured wine, with violet reflections, clean and bright. It has a strong aroma of red fruit, (redcurrant, cherry), sloes. Tasty, balanced and with good acidity.

Gran Feudo - D.O. Ribera del Duero

The municipality of La Horra (Burgos) is recognised as one of the leading areas of D.O. Ribera del Duero for the quality of its vineyards. Here, in an area known as Los Lobos, we can find the vineyards owned by the winery: 55 hectares of loamy-silt soils at 800 metres above sea level. Here, the native variety Tinta del País (Tempranillo) prevails, accompanied by some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines.

Gran Feudo Roble is made from Tinta Fina (Tempranillo). It remains 4 months in oak barrels. It offers a very ripe black fruit aroma with nuances of wood and spices. In the mouth, it is of medium body, with enveloping tannins and a balanced acidity.

Gran Feudo - D.O. Rueda

From a strict selection of the best areas of the denomination, with lands on both slopes comprised of fine gravels —locally called "cascajos"— at over 800 metres of altitude, with fine stony soils, we obtain the grapes to make our Verdejo wines.

Gran Feudo Verdejo is a single-variety made as a young white wine. It has an attractive straw-yellow colour with a greenish rim. It offers a powerful and clear aroma with nuances of tropical fruit —pineapple, grapefruit, passion fruit— with hints of green fruit and the typical broom bush notes of the variety. In the mouth it is fresh, with a remarkable acidity, unctuous, with volume and with an extraordinary balance.

Gran Feudo “Edición”

The Gran Feudo Edición collection is made up of limited production wines that combine tradition with the most modern techniques in order to create unique wines, with a greater elegance and complexity, which are current and innovative.

Gran Feudo Edición Chardonnay is a single-variety with D.O. Navarra, made as a young white wine. It offers an attractive straw-yellow colour, bright with golden reflections, and an intense aroma with nuances of the variety, such as pineapple and grapefruit. Very fresh.
