The project of Coca i Fitó could be defined as a “driving winemaker”. Although they have a family-run winery in El Masroig, within D.O. Montsant, and although they make their own wines, they also search for good vineyards. This is why they establish collaborations with local winegrowers and oenologists to make wines that reflect the personality of the terroir and the landscape where the grapes grow.
Coca i Fitó began in 2006 in D.O. Montsant. It is the brand that identifies the most unique wines of the winery. The most important thing is the terroir of the farm, which results in wines with their own character, even more than the one given by the identity of the D.O. Most part of the vineyard is owned by the winery, and its cultivation is organic. The small farms are distributed among different municipalities of the valley of Falset (Marçà, El Masroig, Falset, Capçanes, Pradell, Guiamets and La Serra d'Almos), surrounded by Mediterranean woods. The mineral composition of the terroir is varied, although it is mainly formed by granite, licorella (slate), clay, pebbles and calcareous soil.
In 2010, appealed by the essence of the White Grenache, they started to make white wines in D.O. Terra Alta. At the same time, they started to make wines in Empordà, thanks to the joint efforts and knowledge between the winery Roig Parals to make unique, quality wines, with the aim of expressing the surroundings of the territory. The Grenache, old Carignan, and a small amount of Syrah are the key elements, along with the calcareous, flint and slate soils.
They also carry out a new project in Priorat, along with oenologist Eva Escudé and Trossos del Priorat in Gratallops. They make the red wine Samsara, which evokes a set of harmonies, like the minerality and the nerve of the slate. In fact, the brothers Toni and Miquel like slate. This is why they also start their journey towards the lands of the Atlantic, in D.O. Ribeira Sacra, with the help of expert oenologist from Galicia, Andrea Obenza. There, they are in the search for a spectacular landscape inside the gorges of the river Sil. Here they find vines planted on slate soils and they started to make wines in 2013 under the name Tolo do Xisto, which means “crazy for slate” in Galician.
Toni Coca is known for his collaboration with several family wineries, mainly of Priorat and Monsant, like Vinyes Domènech, Clos Galena, Celler Burgos Porta and Trossos del Priorat. However, he has also developed projects in Penedés and the area of Costers del Segre, projects like Mas Blanch i Jové. He has dedicated most part of his life to the research and knowledge surrounding viticulture, to understanding of the mineral interaction of the soil and the vine. Also, to know about the different varieties of grape, their ageing capacity and the interaction between them. On the other hand, Miquel Coca i Fitó, more into gastronomy and the beauty of life, has been in charge of creating the dresses for these gems, helping to transmit the attraction they hide inside the bottle. The images on the bottles of all their wines are works of art by illustrator Oriol Malet, who has sought to transmit the essence of the wine in each on of his designs, as well as to describe the sensations it will give us, either for its freshness, its structure or liveliness, or its sensory experience, among others.
Several factors take part in the production of wines, resulting in end products of great singularity. To achieve this, Coca i Fitó focuses on three main factors: the mineral essence through the combination of different soils; the coupage of varieties, since one variety provides fruit and volume, and the other provides tannins and freshness; and the ageing, where a single wine can age in barrels made of different oaks and different toasting, as well as in amphorae and cement or stainless steel deposits. For Coca i Fitó, the idea is to achieve a backbone where the strength of the wine is provided by the freshness and the fruit, and where the different coupages of soils, varieties and ageing result in a wide range of nuances.
