Wines from Catalonia

The wines from Catalonia are divided into the 10 appellations of origin plus the D.O. of Cava for sparkling wines The latter are mostly produced in Barcelona and Tarragona. Catalan wine production accounts for twenty-five percent of the total Spanish volume. The Mediterranean climate of the area, the variety of soils and the different types of production lead to the creation of red, rosé, white and non-sparkling wines of a high quality. However, in addition to the large volume of cava production, the Catalan wine tradition includes particularly white wines made with local grapes such as xarel·lo or macabeu.
