Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is a red wine produced by the Viña Tondonia winery in the D.O.Ca Rioja.
The winery is situated in Haro (Rioja Alta), one of the most prestigious and privileged areas for the cultivation of vines in Spain. Viña Tondonia is a historic winery, the first in Haro and the third in la Rioja. The quality of their wines is a true testament to their 144 history.
This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. The grapes come from a low yield vineyard, over 100 years old on the Viña Tondonia estate.
The harvest is carried out manually, bunch by bunch, in boxes of poplar wood made by the winery.
Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is aged for 10 years in oak barrels from the wineries own cooper, and undergoes 2 rackings per year. Finally the wine is clarified using fresh egg from the estate, and is bottled without being filtered.
Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is a true classic of La Rioja. This is an excellent, fine and elegant wine, and showcases what can be done with a long barrel ageing. It is an example of tradition, and a knowledge that has been passed down the generations.
In La Rioja there are large wineries and also great wineries. A handful of them are century-old, some are very well-known, some are actually quite small. We must not forget family-run wineries and the abundant harvester's wineries or "cosecheros". Viña Tondonia is many of those things, besides being a winery that has been run by the same family since its origins. Through four generations and despite the continuous and tempting offers of multinationals, for a hundred years, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is still a single-family winery. Here, the four generations that have directed it have continued with the philosophy and the social and work principles set by its founder more than 139 years ago.
