Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Bianco

Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Bianco is a young, single-variety white wine made with the ancient Falanghina variety in Campania (Italy) by the Villa Matilde winery.

In 1960 Villa Matilde was built at the foot of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano, a few kilometres from Naples, with the aim of reviving the cult wines that were made in that same area at the time of the Roman Empire. To do this, they researched and found the ancient varieties that these wines were made with. As a result, they became one of the first wineries to bring the famous Falerno wine back to the market.

The nature of the soil in the Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Bianco vineyards is volcanic and contains a good amount of phosphorus and potassium. These are 25 to 50 year old strains planted at an altitude of 140 metres above sea level. They use traditional agriculture and low-consumption agricultural machinery as well as reusing water for irrigation. The yield is limited to approximately 4,500 kg per hectare and the harvest is manual, selecting the clusters one by one.

After the grapes have been destemmed, Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Bianco goes through a cold maceration (around 5ºC) for greater aromatic extraction. It is then gently pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature of about 10/12°C over 20 days. Finally the wine ages for 3 months in stainless steel tanks. A small amount of the wine (5%) is aged in terracotta vats.

Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Bianco is a white wine inspired by the cult Falerno wine that was made at the time of the Roman Empire. A very aromatic, easy and flavoursome taste of the past.
