Pecorino is one of Italy’s most expressive grapes. Traditionally this white variety, originating from the Sibylline Mountains (in the central Apennines) and eaten by sheep herds (pecore in Italian), was cultivated in the Piceno and Abruzzo regions. A very rich grape, with a great variety of nuances, it was on the verge of disappearing. While most winegrowers opted for other varieties with higher yields (Trebbiano and Malvasia), winegrower Cocci Grifoni was always determined to preserve it.
They say you can achieve great things through perseverance and tenacity. And he managed to make a wine that has been recognised and awarded around the world over the years. Thanks to this, the number of hectares and the production of Pecorino has increased. One of the wines from this interesting range is Torre dei Beati Giocheremo con i Fiori Pecorino, a white wine produced by the Torre dei Beati winery in the D.O.C.Abruzzo.
In 2005 Adriana Galasso and Fausto Albanesi decided to plant 5 hectares of this variety in Loreto Aprutino (Pescara). These vines grow facing east-northwest on a clay-limestone soil with a sandy substrate at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. This vineyard, which is the newest, is planted with vines trained using trellises and entirely organically cultivated without any chemicals. The berries are under the influence of warm air pockets from the Adriatic and cold air pockets from the mountains (which are already snowy in September). This temperature contrast helps the grapes to ripen well, resulting in great quality bunches. Only the best bunches are harvested by hand and taken to the winery, where they undergo another selection process. The vinification process, which takes place in an old renovated farmhouse in the centre of the vineyard, uses state-of-the-art machinery and technology, but always based on tradition. Torre dei Beati Giocheremo con i Fiori Pecorino is fermented in stainless steel tanks. At the end of this process, the wine spends six months on its lees, developing body, structure and unctuousness. Nice to meet you, Torre dei Beati Giocheremo con i Fiori Pecorino!
Torre dei Beati Giocheremo con i Fiori Pecorino 2020 is an aromatic white wine. The nose is elegant and mellow, with citrus and floral notes. On the palate it is smooth and juicy, with mineral touches. Good balance between alcohol, acidity and minerality. Long and persistent finish.
