Forewarned is forearmed. And we’ve already warned you. Both us and the winery Torre de Beati, in Abruzzo (the Italian region on the Adriatic coast). They’re the creators of Torre dei Beati Cocciapazza Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a single varietal Montepulciano, produced under D.O.C. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, , which threatens to make you lose your mind with every sip.
Specifically, this wine has been named after the old name given to the area where the 21 hectares of vineyards that Adriana Galasso and Fausto Albanesi inherited from Rocco Galaso (Adriana's father) in 1999 are planted. To be more precise, in Abruzzo dialect, coccia pazza means "crazy head". And this is possibly the best qualification to accompany the Montepulciano that grows in this area on clay-limestone soils. Here the vines grow at a distance from the ground, at altitude, on the Abruzzese pergola, about 200 meters above sea level and about 25 km from the Adriatic. This means that the sea breezes bring in warm air that combines with the cold air which descends from the Gran Sasso d'Italia, the highest massif in the Apennines, whose peak is already snow-capped in September. The contrast between these two temperatures causes the grapes to ripen perfectly and without complications, offering the best version of the variety.
For this reason, the grapes are harvested gradually, without any big upheavals, in small quantities (20 kg boxes), selecting the best bunches in the vineyard itself. From here the grapes quickly reach the winery, where they are once again selected and prepared for vinification. At all times the process will be carried out in stainless steel tanks, where fermentation will take place. Once finished, Torre dei Beati Cocciapazza Montepulciano d'Abruzzo will spend 20 months aging in French oak barrels.
Torre dei Beati Cocciapazza Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2018 is a concentrated red wine. On the nose, the red Montepulciano fruit stands out, contrasting with black pepper, licorice, chocolate and tobacco. On the palate it has structure, with soft tannins. Fresh, acid, pleasant, very light to drink.
