Real reviews from customers who have purchased this product

Sobrecasa Rosado Clásico is a rosé wine produced by Alfredo Maestro in Peñafiel (Valladolid), V.T. Castilla y León.

Alfredo Maestro is a renown winegrower that has continued with his own progress, without paying attention to trends or currents prevailing at the time. He began to produce wine following conventional methods, this is, adding sulphur, clarifying the wine and a long etcetera. However, he soon decided to make wine using natural methods, turning the characteristics of the terroir into wine in the most faithful way.

Alfredo Maestro challenges and strongly opposes the way wine is made nowadays. He understands that wine must be faithful to its origin and for this reason he gets rid of external elements (sulphur, acid, filters, stabilisers...). According to him, he only needs three elements to create his products: grapes, well-kept vineyards and healthy soil.

Currently, Alfredo Maestro has several projects in different areas, such as Cigales, Ávila, Duratón, and Chinchón.

Sobrecasa Rosado Clásico is a natural wine made mainly from Tempranillo and other varieties in small percentages (Grenache, Muscatel, Verdejo, Palomino). All the grapes come from a single 4-hectare vineyard called Sobrecasa, located in Cigales. It was planted more than 80 years ago at 750 metres of altitude on soils with alluvial gravel (cascajos).

Harvesting is carried out manually, selecting the grapes in the vineyard and in the winery, on a selection table. Once the grapes are destemmed and crushed by direct pressing, they ferment in stainless steel deposits with native yeasts at a controlled temperature, between 15 and 20ºC. Once the fermentation has ended, the wine is left to stand for 8 months in 2000-litre chestnut wood barrels. It is not clarified or filtered.

Until recently, the D.O Cigales was a region that produced wines that were defined by the rural and traditional nature of the region and its ancient history. The wines here were made using traditional techniques such as stone vats, treading the grapes by foot and fermentation left to the vagaries of nature. However, over the past two decades, the reality of wine here has become something very different. One only has to enter any of the of the region’s renowned wineries to notice that their wines have taken the highway of modernity, shaking off their old reputation. The region has continued to produce rosés, although they are now juicier, fresher and well balanced. The region is also leaning ever more towards the production of red wines, following the example set by other regions along the Duero river, although perhaps with the difference that here they may be easier to drink.
