Characteristics Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige
In 1961 Count Marzotto, founder of the Santa Margherita winery, decided to put a new twist on winemaking. Until then, the Pinot Grigio, a variety native to northern Italy, had been vinified using the traditional ramatto method (which translates as “copper”). This production method, the most common in the area, was based on maceration, where the must achieved that characteristic tone in contact with the skin. Gaetano Marzotto, however, envisioned another way of working with Pinot Grigio: eliminating maceration altogether. This gave rise to a new white wine that was much more elegant and sophisticated, and managed to captivate and surprise the whole world. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige!
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige is an iconic wine, one of those that made history and is still remembered today. That simple choice, to vinify these rosé grapes as if they were white (with gentle pressings) catapulted the Santa Margherita winery to the top. Entrepreneurship and innovation have always been two characteristic features of this company, which has always been committed to searching for new lands. This courage, which Marzotto showed from its founding in 1935, has led Santa Margherita to become one of the largest wineries in Italy, with vineyards in the country’s best locations.
As the name suggests, Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige, comes from the D.O.C. Valdadige, in the heart of the Adige Valley, in northeastern Italy (above the Ceraino dam and on the border with Verona). In the heart of the province of Trento, between valleys and high slopes, Santa Margherita has several hectares of vineyards growing on gravelly, mineral-rich soils. Here, where the agricultural tradition is passed down from generation to generation, grapes grow in a very particular microclimate, with abundant rainfall and significant temperature variations between day and night. Following a manual harvesting and soft pressing, Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige ferments in stainless steel tanks for 10 to 15 days at a temperature of 18°C. Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige is aged for several months in these same tanks until bottling.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige was Santa Margherita’s great success, but not the only one. Others followed; but without a doubt Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Valdadige is the star sparkling wine and the best introduction to the Santa Margherita universe.
