Rabasco Rosso Cancelli 2020 is a juicy red wine with aromas of very dark ripe fruit, earthy notes and herbal hints. On the palate it is light, fresh and honest. A slender, fruity wine with fine tannins and a subtly bitter finish. A great addition to your table.

Going against the tide has never been easy. And going against the tide in a wine-growing region with a long winemaking tradition like Abruzzo (Italy), you can be sure that it is a matter of conviction. This is how Iola Rabasco makes natural wines in the village of Pionella (Pesquera) with a much lighter profile than we are used to from the region’s usual powerful and concentrated wines. With the advice of friend and colleague Danilo Marcucci of the Della Staffa winery, her Società Agricola Rabasco family estate uses no chemicals in the vineyard or in the winery.  As Iola herself explains “the vocation of the place and the traditional grape variety are a guarantee of honesty and authenticity.”

Rabasco Rosso Cancelli is a single-variety wine made with Montepulciano, the area’s star variety, from a vineyard lying at an altitude of 450 metres in the Pescara region’s inner hills about 40 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea. These are old vines aged over 40 years old and planted on soils composed mainly of calcareous clay mixed with alluvial sediments and fossil remains. They are cultivated organically and by hand through the so-called “tendone” method, a traditional system used to lift the vines that makes it impossible to work with machinery.

Considering that Iole insists that wine is made in the vineyard and not in the cellar, Rabasco Rosso Cancelli is vinified with minimal intervention. Once the grapes have been harvested, the must ferments spontaneously in the winery with its native yeasts and skin-contact maceration for 4-7 days. The process involves no temperature control or any oenological additives. It then stays with its lees in stainless steel tanks and finally the wine is bottled without added sulphur and without filtration or clarification.

Made from a vineyard located next to the house’s door, Rabasco Rosso Cancelli takes the ‘Cancelli’ part of its name from the Italian word for door, and is a beautiful, fresh and slightly wild red wine. A great opportunity to enjoy the achievements of those who dare to go against the grain.
