Purgatori is a red wine produced by Bodegas Torres in the municipality of Les Borges Blanques (Lleida), within D.O. Costers del Segre.

Bodegas Torres is a family business that was founded in 1870 by Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell, and that has had several generations dedicated to the production of wine and brandy in Penedés. Currently, Bodegas Torres produces wines in many wine regions of the world. In Spain, it has 4 wineries of its own, in 4 other denominations of origin, Penedés, Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat.

In 1999, Bodegas Torres acquired the farm Els Desterrats, a farm with an extreme climate dedicated to welcoming the monks of the Abbey of Montserrat to go through their penance. Very soon, they realised that the harsh conditions of the area were ideal for the production of wines of the highest quality.

Purgatori is a wine made with Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, from the best vineyards of Finca Els Destarrats, a farm with over 175 hectares dedicated to vineyards.

Once the harvest is carried out, the grapes ferment in stainless steel deposits, with a controlled temperature of 26-28ºC for a week. When the fermentation has ended, it is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 20 months.

Purgatori is a mature, intense and deep wine. On the nose, the aromas of ripe red fruit with smoked and lactic notes of its ageing stand out. In the mouth, it is fresh and it expresses all the concentration of fruit.

Legend has it that large barrels of this wine mysteriously disappeared. Some said that it was the angels who, after secretly coming down to earth to taste their excellent wines, took part of them each year up to heaven.

When we refer to the DO Costers del Segre we think of wines with a continental character, which in some respects is true, but extensive replantation of international grape varieties means that the majority of wines produced here lack a geographical or territorial trademark, even though the vast majority of the wines are technologically perfect. However, there are currently wineries such as Mas Blanch i Jové, Costers del Sio, L’Olivera, Lagravera and Thomas Cusiné, among others, who concentrate their effors on producing wines with what are considered varieties native to the region. However, the majority of this region is still dominated by classic international varieties.
