Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo is a red wine made by Protos with the Tinto Fino variety in Ribera de Duero.

Protos, which means first in Greek, was founded in 1927 as the first winery in Ribera de Duero. A future-focussed project that is known around the world for its emphasis on high quality. A great project that already has two wineries in Ribera: Peñafiel (Valladolid) and Anguix (Burgos), where they make their crianza and reserva reds, and another one in Rueda: La Seca (Valladolid), where they make white wines using the Verdejo variety. In terms of buildings, Protos has spectacular facilities. The building has even been awarded the Pritzker architecture prize for its great functional design.

Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo comes from very old vines that are over 70 years old and lie more than 800 m above sea level. They practice traditional agriculture and produce a low yield of 1,500 kilograms per hectare. The harvest is carried out manually in 20 kg boxes and carefully selected in the vineyard.

In the winery, the Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo grapes pass over the selection table, berry by berry, before being destemmed. Then alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place in 500 l French oak barrels for 24 days at a temperature of 28ºC. Finally, malolactic fermentation and aging take place over 18 months in new French oak barrels from three different coopers.

Protos Selección El Grajo Viejo is a great limited production Ribera wine that reveals the full power, elegance and expression of a truly unique terroir.

La Ribera del Duero tells us a story about an ancestral tradition that goes back to the 9th century, and which was already used my the monks of the Order of the Cistercians. A story about farms and terroirs, a large winemaking kingdom that has its roots back in the Middle Age, and whose imprint it hidden in the essence of its villages, its villas and its castle, Castillo de Peñafiel, on the of the most important fortresses of the region. Still preserved in the inside of the castle is the ageing winery of Protos, the first winery in the area, alongside Vega Sicilia, that sold bottled Ribera del Duero wines.
Pictures and situation Protos
Ribera del Duero wine is one of the most prestigious wines in Spain. Red wines made with Tinto Fino variety grapes, with highly complex aromas, fine on the palate and with a great storage capacity. The wines of Ribera del Duero present a perfect balance between the vividness of the fruit and the refinement of the wood, which has led to them obtaining a well-deserved international acclaim.
