Characteristics Protos Gran Reserva
Bodegas Protos is a historic winery. It was the first winery that began the production of wine in the Ribera del Duero, in 1927.
Protos Gran Reserva is made with the grapes from Tinta del País, grown on old vines more than 60 years old.
The vines are planted in mainly calcareous sandy loam soils which are not very fertile, in plots close to River Duero.
It encounters a Mediterranean climate with continental climate influences. Dry summers with a lot of heat, in contrast to the very cold winters.
There is also a difference in temperature between the day and the night which can be transferred to the long ripening of the grapes, a lot of concentration of tannins and colour.
The harvest is done by hand, applying a selection of the bunches in their vineyards. The grapes are transported to the winery in small 20kg crates.
Once in the winery, there is a second selection of the first bunches in order to finish the selection of the best grapes.
Protos Gran Reserva undergoes a 24 month aging in oak barrels and a stay for 36 months in the bottle.

On the palate it is velvety, smooth and elegant. Well matured tannins. Warm and friendly. Fruity with good acidity. Very elegant and persistent aftertaste.

Very good, large and bulky attack. Well bodied wine with a velvety, tasty and intense mid palate. Its abundant notes of fruit are very well balanced with the aromas of wood. Balanced and concentrated wine with polished and ripe tannins. It shows a very long and very persistent finish.

La Ribera del Duero tells us a story about an ancestral tradition that goes back to the 9th century, and which was already used my the monks of the Order of the Cistercians. A story about farms and terroirs, a large winemaking kingdom that has its roots back in the Middle Age, and whose imprint it hidden in the essence of its villages, its villas and its castle, Castillo de Peñafiel, on the of the most important fortresses of the region. Still preserved in the inside of the castle is the ageing winery of Protos, the first winery in the area, alongside Vega Sicilia, that sold bottled Ribera del Duero wines.
