Phinca Hapa Elvillar Tinto is an organic barrel-aged red wine made with the Tempranillo and Graciano varieties in the D.O.Ca. Rioja by Bodegas Bhilar.

Melanie Hickman, an American winemaker, started working at the Bhilar Winery with the desire to reveal the maximum expression of the Alava terroir through organic and biodynamic agriculture. A desire that came to fruition in 2016 when she spent her life savings on a very special vineyard. Vines that she named after her beloved deceased dog Hapa and which she uses to make unique wines under the Struggling Vines label.

Phinca Hapa Elvillar Tinto comes from vineyards located in the town of Elvillar in Alava. These are old vines aged over 50 years old, lying about 646 metres above sea level and planted in calcareous soil. They are cultivated using sustainable agriculture, ecological techniques and biodynamic treatments and in the field the tractor is replaced by the workhorse. The harvest is also manual, using 10 kg boxes.

In the winery, Phinca Hapa Elvillar Tinto is vinified with the whole bunches. They are put into concrete tanks and carbonic maceration takes place ahead of spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Then the wine is pressed and placed in 500-litre French oak barrels for 12 months. Only a small amount of sulphites are added before bottling.

Phinca Hapa Elvillar Tinto is a light, fruity and easy-to-drink red wine that expresses the Tempranillo and Graciano native varieties in their most fresh and natural state.
