Peique Viñedos Viejos Crianza is a red wine produced by Bodegas Peique in Valtuille de Abajo, D.O.Bierzo.

The Peique family owned a small vineyard and had been making small lots of wine for many years; after a couple of years of bottling tests, in 2001 they finally decided to build a small winery and make a qualitative leap, thanks to Jorge, one of the sons of Luis Peique, who is a professional oenologist that works for an important wine group every day.

The vineyard has 40 hectares divided between their own vineyards and vineyards provided by neighbours who cannot look after them. This vineyard is formed by small plots ranging between 0.2 and 1 hectare, located between 450 and 600 metres of altitude, with the influence of an Atlantic climate, partly continental and mild.

Currently, Bodegas Peique produces a wide range of wines that express the terroir of its vineyards and the philosophy that has been created during the last three family generations in Valtuille de Abajo.

Peique Viñedos Viejos Crianza is a wine made from Mencía, from vineyards that are between 45 and 55 years old, located on hills at 450-580 metres of altitude on sandy and clayey soils.

The harvest is performed manually. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they go through a pre-fermentation maceration for 3-5 days at 4-6ºC. They go through alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel deposits. Once it ends, they go through maceration with their skins for 10-25 days. This wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 12 months.

Peique Viñedos Viejos Crianza is an ample, unctuous and intense wine, with the maximum expression of the elegant rusticity of the Mencía in this area.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
