Trusted Shops Reviews

Peique Selección Familiar is a single-variety Mencía red wine produced by Bodegas Peique in the D.O. Bierzo, in Castilla y León, Spain.

Peique Selección Familiar is made with clusters from vineyards planted with old Mencía vines that are around 90 years old and grow between 450 and 580 metres above sea level.

The vines are harvested by hand and when they reach the winery, they macerate for 3 to 5 days at controlled temperatures of no more than 6ºC.

Alcoholic fermentation takes place over a period of 6 to 10 days. The resulting wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages in French oak barrels for 18 months. After bottling, Peique Selección Familiar rests in the cellar for 15 months to finish refining before being released for sale.

Peique is a young family winery but with a great winemaking tradition. It is located in Valtuille de Abajo and, after just 20 years, they have managed to find the most authentic essence of their almost hundred-year-old Mencía and Godello vines, which they have cultivated and cared for for three generations.

With Peique Selección Familiar their aim is to recover Mencía clusters from a small but beautiful family plot to produce a delicate and elegant wine, a Mencía history.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
