Mengoba Mencía de Espanillo is a red wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba in Carracedelo, D.O. Bierzo.
Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba is a project lead by the renowned oenologist Gregory Pérez. Always with respect for the vines and their sustainability, the winery has become one of the greatest symbols of El Bierzo.
Mengoba Mencía de Espanillo is a wine made mainly from Mencía, from an 80-year-old vineyard located at 700 metres of altitude in Espanillo. It is planted on decomposed slate soils with sandy areas. It also has a small percentage of Alicante Bouschet and Godello. They are manually harvested and placed in boxes. Once destemmed and crushed, they pass on to 2500 litre wooden foudres, where they go through alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. They will remain in these foudres for 11 months before the wine is bottled, without filtering and with a slight clarification.
Mengoba Mencía de Espanillo is a blunt, rustic wine with a lot of personality. An authentic Mencía, very well complemented by the freshness of the Alicante Bouschet and the Godello.
