We don’t know if the hilarious Billy Wilder comedy “with skirts and crazy” where everything happens to the crazy Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon has inspired the Mas Candí winery to make this Xare·lo and Sumoll coupage. But what we do know is that Mas Candí Con barbas ya lo loco is a sulphite-free claret that will drive a few people crazy.

That is because Mas Candí, the gang made up of Ramon Galimany, Toni Carbó, Mercè Cuscó, and Ramon Jané in the heart of the D.O. Penedès let their imaginations run wild when it comes to their creations. To begin with, they committed to their area by recovering native varieties on the edge of extinction and all of their work is artisanal and without chemical products. This is a return to how things used to be done, basing their work on what their ancestors learned and making this clear for all to see with some striking labels.

Their latest scheme, Mas Candí Con barbas ya lo loco is a wine made from 100% organic grapes. The grapes are pressed as they used to be, with feet (50% are destemmed) and after macerating for 15 days in stainless steel tanks, the must ferments spontaneously with native yeasts. To finish and refine, the wine stays in this same tank for a further 7 months. Once ready, the wine is bottled without filtering, clarifying or adding sulphur.

The result of all this work is Mas Candí Con barbas ya lo loco, a natural rosé that, like all Mas Candí wines, is known for showcasing an authentic and honest expression of the Catalan terroir. A fresh and fruity drink to drive you mad.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
