Maruxa Mencía is a red wine made by the Virgen del Galir winery in the D.O. Valdeorras, in Galicia (Spain) with the Mencía variety.
The Virgen del Galir winery is a relatively new project in the heart of Vadeorras, on the edge of the Camino de Santiago. The winery has 20 extraordinary micro-plots lying more than 600 metres above sea level and on slate and granite soils. It has been owned by CVNE since 2018.
Maruxa Mencía comes from recovered vineyards lying on terraces and slopes, in the Sil Valley. These are hundred-year-old vines planted in clay loam soils and slate. They are cultivated using traditional agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in 15 kg boxes.
In the winery, Maruxa Mencía macerates in a refrigerator and in a tank for 48 hours beforehand. The grapes are destemmed and gently pressed and the resulting must is fermented with native yeasts.
Named after the mother of the winery’s founder, Maruxa Mencía is a young, fresh and broad red that faithfully showcases the Valdeorras essence.
