Summer makes us think of sand between our toes, salty lips from the sea and a slower pace of life. These are ideas that Mirco Mariotti has integrated into his daily life very well, as well as expressing them in his “beach wines”. This is a style of wine made along the Adriatic coast, in the province of Ferrara, where the vines are carefully and unhurriedly cultivated on land that is touched by the scented sea breeze and Mediterranean scrubland, just 300 metres from the Adriatic Sea. Taking on the family estate with his sister Barbara in 2009 and having studied oenology at the University of the Sacred Heart in Piacenza, Mirco began to make local wines following the tradition of Emilia wines (IGT Emilia). These wines are made from local varieties that remind us of the wines that used to be drunk by the old peasant families of the area.
The Mariotti Malestar wine comes from vines over 100 years old located in Bosco Eliceo, the grand cru cultivation area of Fortana. These are twisted vines of the native Montù variety with 2-metre deep roots that are nourished by the sands near the Po delta. The vines are cultivated using organic agriculture and once the grapes have been harvested by hand, they undergo a natural vinification process without the use of chemical products that could spoil the intrinsic characteristics of the grapes. The must firstly undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and then rests on its lees. Finally, the wine is bottled without being clarified, filtered or adding sulphites.
The result is Mariotti Malestar, a still white wine with a low alcohol content and plenty of minerality. A traditional flavour characterised by a marked saline touch both on the nose and the palate. A pleasant white wine that will bring to mind the best moments of the summer.
Mariotti Malestar 2020 is an aromatic white wine with an intense nose of yellow apple and fresh fruit accompanied by a mineral background. The palate is balanced and fresh with a slight touch of acidity. A rich and smooth wine, with a very persistent finish.
