About Marimar Albariño

What is an original variety from Galicia (Spain) like Albariño doing on the other side of the pond? The person responsible for this feat is Marimar Torres, the fourth generation of the prestigious Torres family, who arrived in California and saw her dream of making wines the way she likes them come true. As well as being a pioneer in planting European varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the region, she dared to try the Albariño variety, thinking that the Californian climate shares many similarities with the Galician climate. Given that Marimar Estate Vineyards & Winery has two vineyards named after her parents, Don Miguel in the Russian River Valley (15 km from the Pacific) and Doña Margarita on the Sonoma Coast (5 km from the Pacific), it was a surprise to discover that, of the two vineyards, Albariño is best suited to being planted further from the Pacific.

The Marimar Albariño grapes come from a vineyard that has a climate very similar to that of Galicia. These vines are located in Green Valley, in the Russian River Valley, which is characterised by being the coldest and foggiest area in the region. A climate very similar to that of northwestern Spain has allowed the planting and ripening of a grape that, when treated well, provides joy, freshness and elegance. With sustainability certification granted by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, healthy, ripe and consistent grapes are harvested by hand and, after a minimal pressing, the resulting must is fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts. The wine then remains on the lees in these same tanks before bottling.

This is how Marimar Albariño is made, the first Marimar Torres wine made with a Spanish variety. A single-variety wine that enjoys the classic Albariño character but with the vibrant unique touch that the Californian sun gives it.

Marimar Albariño 2020 is a defined white wine with aromas of stone fruit, floral notes of jasmine and hints of wet stones. On the palate it is fresh, flavoursome and balanced. A wine with vibrant acidity, good structure and a long finish with delicious mineral sensations.
