List of products by brand Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz (Finca La Emperatriz)

Finca La Emperatriz is a winery in La Rioja that cultivates its vineyards with millimetric precision. They are parcelled out to produce modern wines, both in classic coupages with grapes of different varieties and plots, to achieve round, balanced and tasty wines. Just as in their single-vineyard wines, which show the personality of the grape and the character of the specific terroir where they come from.

The history of this unique winery begins in 1878, when a wine produced in a lost Riojan village called Baños de Rioja won a prize in the wine competition at the Universal Exhibition of Paris. The red wine at issue was presented by Eugenia de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, Empress of France and owner of a vineyard farm located in La Rioja.

And the story continues with more sorrow than glory, until 1996, when the Hernáiz family bought the farm with the firm conviction of producing quality wines.  Although the historic farm of Baños de Rioja is now the heart of Finca La Emperatriz, the origin of this project is in Cenicero, where the brothers Eduardo and Víctor Hernáiz were born. Here, they grew up in continuous contact with the wine culture, and their grandfathers, both on their father and mother's side, had vineyards that the Hernáiz continue to maintain and pamper like their ancestors did.

From its beginnings, Eduardo and Victor Hernáiz lead the winegrowing project, recovering the old vines that still grew in the property and planting new ones. Shortly afterwards they decided to parcel the farm and to focus on the singularity of the terroir as a base for their terroir wines, anticipating to many other winemakers of the area. At the time, the parcelling of the farm was key to achieving the multitude of nuances that the range of wines from Finca La Emperatriz has today.

Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz is the current name of the company that owns Finca La Emperatriz. The Hernáiz Brothers decided to change the company name to welcome new wine projects in D.O.Ca. Rioja, taking advantage of the new classification that the council started to apply from the 2017 harvest.

Work philosophy

Finca La Emperatriz is located in the north-western part of D.O.Ca. Rioja, 12 km from Haro, almost bordering with the province of Burgos, between the mountain ranges Sierra de Cantabria and Sierra de La Demanda. It is located at 570 metres of altitude, one of the highest areas of Rioja Alta . Thanks to the location and altitude of the farm, its climate is more continental than what is usual in Rioja, but at the same time, it is tempered by the influence of the Cantabrian sea.

The farm has 102 hectares, of which 85 are vineyards and, among these, 35 are over 60 years old.  Despite being a single piece of land, the farm is divided into 22 perfectly delimited plots, corresponding in each case to a certain combination of a series of variables: grape variety, rootstock, age of the vines, orientation of the vineyard, specific microclimate, plantation density, etc., which allow them to practice a customised viticulture and oenology for each plot, depending on their characteristics, thus obtaining wines with different personalities. For the most part, at the Farm they cultivate Tempranillo, although it also has some plots with Grenache and Viura. The winery has supported their potential, perceiving the peculiarities of each one of them and putting the necessary resources at their service to handle them correctly.

The soil of Finca La Emperatriz is unique in La Rioja. It has a surface layer of 40 cm with white boulders that completely hides the soils, which has a loam-sandy structure. This characteristic soil gives elegance to the wines and is ideal to cultivate the vines. It provides the vineyard with good drainage, suitable light for the bunches, a good root arrangement and a limited supply of nutrients, in addition to some water stress. The whiteness of the stones also reflects the sunlight and increases the sun exposure of the plants, thus favouring the concentration of polyphenols in the berries.

Wines from Finca Emperatriz, now Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz

Finca La Emperatriz Viura is their young white wine. It comes from grapes from plots no. 2, 3 and 6, which are over 60 years old and planted in vase shape. After a careful harvest, the grapes enter the winery, where they go through a light cold maceration in an inert atmosphere. Subsequently, the must is settled by gravity, moving on to a slow fermentation at a temperature that does not exceeding 15°C. After the alcoholic fermentation, the wine remains with its fine lees in suspension for two months. On the nose, it has aromas of white fruit, flowers and citrus. In the mouth, it is unctuous and fresh at the same time, with a pleasant acidity that gives it balance, with a sapid finish where the intense fruit sensations appear once again.

Finca La Emperatriz Crianza is made with a coupage of Tempranillo, Graciano and Viura from plots no. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18 of Finca La Emperatriz. The vines are between 15 and 65 years old, trained in vase shape and espalier. After the selection of bunches in the field, it is fermented in stainless steel deposits for 4 days, with light pump-overs for polyphenol and colour extraction. After the saignée and elimination of gross lees, it is left with its fine lees, stirring continuously in the deposit. Then, it is aged in 225-litre American (80%) and French (20%) oak barrels for 14 months, and 12 months in the bottles. On the nose, it is very delicate, with notes of cherry and strawberry along with the spices of its ageing in wood. In the mouth, it is elegant and fluid, and the fresh red fruit stands out once again at first, with light nuances of violets and bakery. It has a long finish, with spicy nuances and bakery.

Finca La Emperatriz Reserva is made from an assemblage of Tempranillo, Grenache, Viura and Graciano from plots no. 4, 11, 14 and 15, planted with 60-year-old vines with a yield per strain of 1.5 kg.  After two days of pre-fermentation maceration, it is fermented with soft pump-overs at a controlled temperature, and it is aged for 18 months in American (70%) and French (30%) oak barrels. On the nose, the tertiary aromas of its ageing stand out, with cacao, cigar box and orange peel on a background of ripe cherry and plum. Very elegant and fresh. In the mouth, it stands out for its very polished and tasty tannins.

Finca La Emperatriz Parcela Nº1. The winery says that the vines of plot no.1, selected for the production of this Tempranillo, only yield 4 bunches. This is the top wine of the winery and the maximum expression of the terroir of Finca La Emperatriz. This is a 67-year-old vineyard, planted in vase shape. The grapes arrive at the selection table 20 minutes after they are harvested. At the table, they remove the leaves and berries that are not in perfect condition. Then, they are inserted into a wooden vat where they ferment and macerate. After the saignée, the wine is taken directly to the barrel for its malolactic fermentation. Then, it is aged for 18 months in new fine-grain French oak barrels. The wine is bottled without clarifying or stabilising. Its aromas stand out for their intensity and a complexity. From ripe plum to flint stone, going through liquorice and undergrowth. Strong in the mouth, with a polished tannin that leaves a velvety sensation. Very long, with a retronasal where the aromas are of fruit stand out, as well as the cigar box.

Finca La Emperatriz "Terruño" is a 100% Tempranillo from plot no. 10, planted in 1997 in two-metre espalier, double guyot and a plant cover along the rows of vines. After being harvested, the grapes remain in the cold chamber overnight, and then they go through cold maceration. They ferment in an open deposit for 6 days and they are directly bled into the barrel, where they go through malolactic fermentation and subsequent ageing of 16 months in new and second-use French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels. On the nose, the typical red fruit of the Tempranillo appear with great intensity. In the mouth, it is deep and tasty, with a silky tannin. The fruit, more red and black, appears once again with notes of vanilla, minerals and undergrowth.

Finca La Emperatriz Garnacha Cepas Viejas is a single-variety that is born from plot no. 5, planted with 65-year-old vines. After the harvest, the grapes are transferred to a cold chamber, where they stay overnight. The skin-contact maceration is carried out over a week. Then, the fermentation is carried out in 500-litre French oak barrels, with manual daily punch-downs. After the malolactic fermentation in the same barrels, the wine remains with its lees during its ageing in single and second-use French oak barrels for 11 months. It is a very perfumed wine on the nose, with aromas of violet, white pepper and wild strawberries. In the mouth, an almost spicy freshness prevails, making it very suggestive along with a medium body. A wine that stands out for its length rather than its width, with an explosive aftertaste and a long finish.

Finca La Emperatriz Viura Cepas Viejas is born from plot no. 2, planted with Viura vines that are 67 years old, trained in vase shape. Fermentation takes place in 18 single and second-use French barrels, at a controlled temperature. Then, it remains nine months in the barrels where it fermented, with frequent stirring of its lees. On the nose, it stands out for its great complexity and a medium intensity that causes the wine to open up with each movement of the glass. Pear and soft nuances of peach stand out, with shades of dry flowers and spices. In the mouth, it is long, unctuous and with a lot of body.
