Remelluri is an idyllic farm located in the surroundings of Labastida, La Rioja Alavesa. It has a hundred hectares of their own vineyard, where the Rodríguez Hermandorea family has perfectly recreated a vineyard in the style of the "château" from Bordeaux. Telmo Rodríguez, faithful to the oenological roots of the region, and restless and innovative in the most modern winemaking techniques, has boosted one of the most prestigious wineries in the region in the recent years, with splendid wines that transmit the personality of the terroir and the personal seal of the Remelluri house.

The origin of the farm, Granja de Remelluri, is lost in the mists of time. A necropolis in the centre of the farm indicates that there was a village already there in the tenth century. It tells us about the Earl from Álava "Erramel", founder of "Erramelluri", a historical place name from the High Middle Ages.

Here, surrounded by the oldest vineyards, carved in the rock is an old wine press, which is surely one of the oldest vineyards of La Rioja. In the fourteenth century, the Jerónimo monks settled in these lands creating a monastic farm, which becomes dependent on the sanctuary of Toloño, located at the top of this hill.

In its surroundings, remains of prehistoric, Roman, Visigothic, Arab and finally medieval villages, speak of an agricultural activity from ancient times. The monks abandoned this place in the fifteenth century, but the sanctuary was maintained by hermits who worship until well into the nineteenth century.

The farm and the monastery depend on the Real Divisa, a communal entity of which all the towns in the surroundings of Toloño are part of. It manages the agricultural lands of the farm, providing its products to the large amount of pilgrims from all over who went to pray to the sanctuary. The oldest book of accounts preserved in the Town Hall of Labastida, dated 1596, describes for all years and until the last century the contribution of wine in "cántaras" of the farm Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri . In the first civil war, in 1837, the sanctuary was burned down by the liberal troops after winning a siege before the Carlist of Peñacerrada. Then, it was in 1845, with the law of confiscation, when the land, houses, and even the hermitage of Santa Sabina were sold to the highest bidder. A landowner of Labastida acquired the main area, keeping the vineyard.

History and philosophy of Bodega Remelluri

The farm Granja de Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, of approximately 20 hectares, remained untouched until 1967. It is then acquired by Jaime Rodríguez Salis and Amaya Hernandorena. Since then, the farm has been recovering its ancient lands, currently a farm of 154 hectares, of which 105 are a restored vineyard, at the same time that they turned the monastery in their current winery. Right now, the vineyard is planted with the varieties Tempranillo, Graciano, Grenache, White Grenache, Moscatel, Malvoisie, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Rousanne and Marsanne, these last ones located in the highest part of the farm.

In 1971 the first bottled harvest of Remelluri was born. From its first vintages, Remelluri became a reference in La Rioja, being one of the first wineries that started to exclusively make wine from the grapes of the property that surround the winery. With the 1989 harvest, Jaime's son, Telmo Rodríguez, takes over the family winery next to his father, after a few years of training in large wineries of Bordeaux and the Rhone, trying to implant the personality of the grape and the terroir in their wines. However, he decided to leave the family project in 1994 to develop his own business, Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, alongside Pablo Eguzkiza.
His work is based on his natural intuition to spot the best areas, his ability to motivate the best winemakers of the region, his knowledge of wine, and his great rapport with a select distribution in the main world markets. It is safe to say that Telmo has the reputation of being one of the best "flying winemakers", this is, an oenologist who travels to produce wines from the same harvest in different areas. Therefore, his company makes wines in La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda, Toro, Navarra, Somontano, Madrid, Alicante, Málaga, even in the Portuguese Douro.

However, in February of 2010, Telmo Rodríguez returned to Remelluri as the direct responsible of the project, combining this job with his own company. His return was a natural process because Remelluri already had a winemaking history since the sixteenth century, and this was the time to make it a genuine viticultural project. In the Remelluri project, he is accompanied by his sister Amaya, an anthropologist with a doctorate degree from Oxford, intelligent and refined by Anne Claude Leflayve, owner of the Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy. The first important changes took place with their help, applying their philosophy, which is based on the search for a more intimate Rioja, a return to the Rioja of the villages where a few plots are reflected in a single wine. For this reason, the grapes of neighbouring winegrowers who historically joined the Remelluri wine took a parallel path.
From now on, Remelluri will start making a wine exclusively made from the farm, and the grapes from the villages of Labastida and San Vicente will give rise to two new wines. The vineyard gathers 200 plots of an average of 0.6 hectares, distributed in three small valleys of Remelluri, Valderremelluri and Villaesclusa, at the foot of mount Toloño, where a spectacular limestone block of 1,272 metres protects the property from the Atlantic storms . The cultivation is done with utmost respect for the environment, organically and following the precepts of biodynamic agriculture, always avoiding the use of herbicides, mineral fertilisers and synthetic products.

Wines from Bodega Remelluri

Remelluri is now quite certain about the value of the terroir, the grape and the vineyard, so they only make five very personal wines that express the full potential of their philosophy. These are the wines from Remelluri:

Remelluri Reserva is the original wine of La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, the result of the most important vineyards of the property. It was the first one of Rioja that was based on a unique winemaking property, according to the classical model of the Bordeaux Medoc. This farm wine is born in the three valleys surrounding the winery, Remelluri, Valderremelluri and Villaescusa, areas that are part of La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri since the 14th century. They belong to the municipalities of Labastida (Rioja Alavesa) and Rivas de Tereso, a region that belongs to San Vicente de La Sonsierra (Rioja Alta). It is made from Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano, Viura and Malvoisie, fermented with native yeasts —like all Remelluri wines— and it ages for 17 months in barrels of different origins and sizes.

Remelluri Gran Reserva is made only in exceptional vintages to produce a unique wine. The best plots of Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano, Moscatel, Viura and Malvoisie from the different microclimates of La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, with traditional viticulture of organic cultivation and with biodynamic treatments. It ferments with native yeasts, and it is aged for 27 months in barrels of different origins and sizes. Then, it remains in the winery for a minimum of 7 years, following the tradition of the Rioja Grandes Reservas.

Remelluri Blanco is a relatively new wine and it reflects the complexity of orientations and soils of the farm. Different varieties are mixed together, 9 types of different grapes, and different production processes are carried to make the place of origin the centre piece of the wine. It is undoubtedly the wine that best explains the character of the vineyard of Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. The fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, between cement and stainless steel vats, barrels and 1200-litre foudres. It is aged around 18 months in French oak barrels of different ages and capacities.

Lindes de Remelluri is launched in the 2009 harvest, when the grapes of the Remelluri property are separated from those coming from other municipalities. As its name suggests, "linde" is the line that separates two of the most interesting winegrowing municipalities of La Rioja, Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where some of the best winegrowers of these two villages brought the grapes to the winery for years. This selection has created two new wines, Lindes from Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida, and Lindes from Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente . Both wines are made from Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Viura grapes, and they are also fermented with native yeasts, and aged for 12 months in 225-litre barrels and 5000-litre French oak barrels.
