Luis Cañas Fermentado en Barrica is a white wine from D.O. La Rioja produced by Bodegas Luis Cañas in Villabuena, Álava. In 1970, this producer started to bottle and market their wines when many others still sold wines in bulk. In 1994, they opened a new winery with the most modern production systems.

They own 350 hectares, mainly planted on clayey-calcareous soils, distributed in 870 plots located in La Rioja Alavesa, an area with an excellent wine tradition. They use a rational viticulture that does not use any herbicides or synthetic fertilisers.

The climate of Rioja Alavesa is a transition between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean climate. The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range protects form the winds and storm from the north, creating a dry climate with large temperature variations that make it perfect for the cultivation of vines and their optimal ripening.

Luis Cañas Fermentado en Barrica is a white wine from D.O. La Rioja produced by Bodegas Luis Cañas. It is a coupage of the varieties Viura (85%) and Malvasía (15%). The grapes for Luis Cañas Fermentado en Barrica come from old vineyards that are over 50 years old. The harvest is done manually and the bunches are selected in the actual vineyard and in the winery.

Luis Cañas Fermentado en Barrica ferments for 17 days at a temperature of 19ºC. Then, it is transferred to new French oak barrels (75%) and American oak barrels (25%) to undergo the malolactic fermentation. It rests in these barrels for 3 months on its lees, resulting in a voluminous and full-bodied wine.

To talk about the Cañas family and wine we have to go back more than two centuries, although the winery, which still has the same family character, was founded in 1928. However, it was in 1970 when Luis Cañas printed his name on the label of his "harvester's wine". From this date onwards, the winery gradually experienced a rise in marketing, and started to develop what is nowadays one of the exemplary wineries of La Rioja Alavesa. Without taking refuge in excessive conservative traditionalism, the personality of Juan Luis, one of the most restless and innovative winemakers in the country, the experience and know-how of the winery team, have made it possible for their wines to be recognised with the most prestigious national and international awards.

Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
