Les Aubaguetes is a coupage of the Garnacha and Cariñena varieties as well as 2% white grapes (Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo). It is made by the Álvaro Palacios winery in the D.O Q. Priorat in Gratallops, Catalonia.
The name, Les Aubaguetes, means “shade” and refers to plots where the sunlight is not as intense. The grapes used to make this wine come from an estate with the same name in Bellmunt del Priorat. This is a north-facing plot, caressed by the sea breeze, balanced by the freshness that comes from the north. It is home to the best old vines, some of which are over 110 years old. This special vineyard is made up of soils with predominantly siliceous slate (licorella) and it is worked according to organic farming principles.
When the clusters reach the winery, they are fully destemmed and the berries are gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with native yeasts in wooden tubs with regular cap plunges. The resulting wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wooden containers and then ages for 16 months in wooden foudres.
Les Aubaguetes is another wine that successfully interprets the landscape and the characteristics of the terrain, terrain where Álvaro Palacios uses his gift for winemaking to enhance the essence of every corner of his Priorat vineyards.
Álvaro Palacios is one of the most famous winemakers in Spain, one of the most internationally renowned, and the person who best represents the oenological revolution that Spain experienced from the 80s and onwards. Currently, it has its small wine-growing kingdom in the emblematic D.O.Q. Priorat, where some of the most coveted and distinguished labels of our country come from. Here, we can find Finca Dofí, Les Terrasses or L'Ermita, the winery's star wine and one of the flagships of Priorat worldwide.
