Altanza Reserva is a single-variety Tempranillo red wine produced by the Altanza winery in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
With the aim of making reserva and gran reserva wines that would be accessible to everyone, a group of Riojan businessmen set up Altanza in 1998 in the town of Fuenmayor, Rioja Alta. Using the name Altanza, meaning ‘loyalty’ in old Castilian, they combine tradition and innovation across more than 200 hectares of their own vineyards. As a result, they create high-end wines, and many of them have been awarded 90 Parker points or more.
Altanza Reserva comes from a dry land plot planted with 30-year-old strains in clay-ferrous soil. With a limited yield of 6,000 kilograms per hectare, they practice traditional agriculture and don’t use any chemicals. Cultivation and harvest is completely manual.
Once the Altanza Reserva grape has been destemmed and crushed, it is vinified in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC over 15 days, plus another 10 days of maceration. It then ages for 18 months in new French oak barrels, plus three months in French oak barrels. Finally, it rests in the bottle for 12 months before going to market.
Altanza Reserva is a tempranillo red wine that expresses the classic style of this Riojan winery. A silky and meaty Gran Reserva that is most importantly accessible to all budgets.
Silky palate, fleshy. Wine-bodied, dense, with hints of fruit, minerals and spices. Long and persistent finish.
