A Roman by birth, Gianmarco Antonuzzi is passionate about good food and good wine. So much so that he became a sommelier and food journalist. Focussing on the importance of terroir, soil, climate, exposure and people, he decided to write a book about different types of terroir. He was so passionate about field work, even more so than writing, that he ended up buying land in his family’s hometown of Gradoli, in northern Lazio, and to decided to make his own wines with his partner and winemaker Clémentine Bouveron. With a total of 14 hectares of land where vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, grains and oak trees coexist, they have started to recover vineyards and traditions under the name Le Coste. This is something they have been delighted to achieve, launching a surprising variety of wines year after year.

Among their best works is Le Coste Carbò, a wine that demonstrates their great mastery of carbonic maceration thanks to everything they learned from their many collaborations with great French winemakers. And if they have learned one thing about this technique, it is that if you want to make a great wine you need the best raw material. They use whole bunches of Sangiovese grapes from vines planted on volcanic soils, rich in iron and minerals. All their work is carried out manually, paying special attention to the needs of each plant and without using any chemical products that could damage the natural balance of the terroir. Once the grapes have reached optimum ripeness, they are moved to the winery in the centre of the village. There, with patience and skill, the grapes undergo a carbonic maceration in French oak vats, some in whole bunches and with the skins, for more than a month. The wine is then aged in used 500 litre barrels for 12 months and finally spends a further 12 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.

Le Coste Carbò was born from the passion and dedication of two people who love their land. A wine with a lively, energetic and holistic character that, as cliché as it may sound, is a pure reflection of the couple.
