Characteristics Las Lamas

Real reviews from customers who have purchased this product

Las Lamas is a red wine made with Mencia and a small amount of local white varieties. It is made by the Descendientes de J. Palaces winery in the D.O. Bierzo in Castilla y León, Spain.

The grapes used to make the Las Lamas wine come from the place with the same name in Corullón, Castilla y León. The plot is classified as the equivalent of a French Grand Cru Classé and lies on steep slopes with predominantly slate and clay soils. The vines are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture. They are 60, 90 and 100 years old and produce extraordinarily high quality wines.

When the clusters reach the winery, they are partially destemmed and gently squeezed to begin alcoholic fermentation in wooden vats with native yeasts. The emerging wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation and ages in barrels and foudres for around 16 months, depending on the vintage, and is bottled unfiltered.

Álvaro Palacios shows once again that he is a visionary of the winemaking world and for this wine, he has joined forces with his nephew, Ricardo P. Palacios , a lover of Bierzo who took over running the Descendants de J. Palacios winery, which is named after Álvaro's father and Ricardo's grandfather and produces some of the most elegant and representative Mencia wines using grapes from the unique slopes of Corullón. Really quite something!

To talk of Descendientes de J. Palacios is to talk about Ricardo Perez and his uncle Álvaro Palacios, both passionate about simplifying the treatment of the vineyards and the wine production process, leading them to become pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture. The winery currently boasts 30 hectares of vineyards spread over 200 different plots, home to old vines and steep soils, which combines the organic with the immaterial in the constant search for the definition and purity of their wines.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
