La Penitencia is a wine made by Raul Perez in the Ribeira Sacra.

Raúl Pérez has become one of the winemakers of reference in Spain. He works with the Mencia grape variety making great wines of limited production, many of whom have been well received by critics. Penance is made with the grapes and facilities of Guímaro, a small family winery that has wonderful old vines of Mencia. Raúl Pérez has his own winery in Bierzo and also collaborates with various wineries worldwide.La Penitencia is a varietal made with grapes from old Mencia vines almost 100 years old. They are planted in small terraces of slate and granite in the canyon of the river Sil, on steep slopes of a 50 % incline.
The harvest is done manually and the vinification process is carried out traditionally. Raúl Pérez seeks the ultimate expression of the vineyard, using minimal intervention throughout the process. The grape is pressed and fermented with yeast in the vineyard.
La Penitencia ages for 12 months in large French oak barrels of 500 litres. Another wonderful and expressive Mencia by Raul Perez.

Raúl Pérez is a philosopher of viticulture. He is also a consultant, apart from an oenologist and the most popular producer of unique wines in Spain. His name is known by a lot of good enthusiasts, and some of his wines are on the agenda of Robert Parker. However, his labels are produced in very small quantities, which makes his wine quite hard to find. He makes his own wines, wines for others and in collaboration with other people. He participates in family projects and other formal and informal ones. He breaks the rules, reaching the limits. He sometimes crosses the line and even crosses borders ... Not bad considering he wanted to become a doctor! Raúl Pérez Raúl Pérez is a philosopher of viticulture. Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that you just have to visit to truly experience it. The vertiginous terraces rise steep on the banks of the river Sil, making the terrain difficult to work on that it requires complete manual work and labor on the vineyards. The agriculture carried out here is aptly referred to as ‘heroic agriculture’, due to the hard work carried out cultivating the land. Both red and white wines are produced in the Ribeira Sacra. The red wines are mostly made with the Mencía variety, defined by their expressive and elegant character with a good acidity. The Ribeira Sacra white wines are principally made with the Godello and Albariño varieties. They are wines with a good volume in the mouth, aromatic and fruity. The Ribeira Sacra wines are often come in very limited productions, are of high quality and with notable personalities.
