Heinrich Weissburgunder Leithaber DAC is an organic, biodynamic and vegan, barrel-aged white wine. Made by the Heinrich winery with the Weissburgunder variety, this is a good example of wine made in the Leithaberg Austrian denomination in Burgenland.

When Gernot and Heike Heinrich took over the family winery, they transformed the wine scene in the Burgenland region. Using the principles set out by Respekt, the biodynamic certifying body, they began to produce quality red wines that are mainly vinified in neutral oak barrels and given time to age. This results in wines that are fresh, mineral and very elegant.

The Heinrich Weissburgunder Leithaber DAC vineyards lie between the Leitha Mountains and Lake Neusiedl. These are 30-year-old vines planted in limestone, sandstone, and mica schist soils. They are cultivated using biodynamic agriculture, working with the environment and avoiding the use of chemical products. Natural and organic treatments are used instead. The grapes are harvested manually.

When the Heinrich Weissburgunder Leithaber DAC grapes reach the winery, they are left to macerate with the skins overnight. They then undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Finally, the wine ages on its lees in large 500-litre oak barrels for 21 months.

Made with Weissburgunder, one of Burgenland’s star varieties, Heinrich Weissburgunder Leithaber DAC is a red wine with great freshness and mineral richness. A clear example of the great red wines that can be made in a land of whites.
