Real reviews from customers who have purchased this product

Hécula is a red wine from the D.O Yecla produced by Bodegas Castaño, one of the leading wineries in the southeast of the Spanish penninsular. This is a monovarietal of the grape Monastrell.

The grapes that produce Hécula, grow at 750m in two fields that are owned by the winery: Las Gruesas and Pozuelo. The average age of the vines are around 40 years old. It has been calculated that there are 1600 vines per hectare, while the yield is around 2000-4000/ha. The harvest is completed in the month of October and the grapes are transported quickly to the winery.

The grapes are fermented at the quickest point possible for 8-10 days at roughly 25ºC. Subsequently, Hécula undergoes a malolactic fermentation. Before being released onto the market and without being stabilised, is aged for 6 months in French oak barrels.

The firmness, will and strength of Ramón Castaño, and his determination to reach maximum quality levels in wines made with the Monastrell variety are his best credentials. The innovative philosophy of the Castaño, improvements in both the winery and the vineyard, as well as the implementation of environmental management systems with organic and integrated agriculture, and the improvement of technical means in the different stages of production, are signs that have been happening harvest after harvest.

The DO. Yecla is currently submerged in the midst of a revolution, led by small private wineries and cooperatives that are fully grasping the cultivation of vineyards and the use of new technologies, working with the star trademark grape: the Monastrell. Over recent years, the region has been producing high quality red wines that have not only built a strong reputation, but are also leading the way for a great future. D.O Yecla is without a doubt one of the most dynamic Denominaciónes de Origen. The region also boasts a strong export market, with 95% of its products sold outside of Spain, with their wines enjoyed by over 40 countries throughout the world.
