Characteristics Grans Muralles

Grans Muralles is an estate wine produced by Torres in D.O. Conca de Barberà. Its name, Grandes Murallas, is taken from the estate that provides the wines, a very special estate. A small estate that is situated at the foot of the walls of the monastery of Poblet, where it first began to cultivate in the thirteenth century when Cistercian monks planted there. The soil of the estate is licorella, slate and gravel.
Grans Muralles is a complex coupage of Catalonian local varieties, some of them are Garró or Querol which virtually disappeared for centuries and have now been recovered by a team of winemakers at Torres.
It took several DNA analysis to locate these varieties among the pre-phylloxera vines that were abandoned.
Grans Muralles is aged in new French oak barrels (Nevers y Allier) for 18 months. The wine is very special. As for its history, for its medieval spirit, its varieties are not as common and well known and, therefore have been recognized for many prizes that are obtained through their vintages. From high Parker points to Gold Medals from Decanter.

As with many other Catalonian wine regions, the DO. Conca de Barberà is developing its own territorial identity that over the years has been redefining the personality of the wines and the region, with the help of the red Trepat grape variety. The Trepat grape can be used to produce good sparkling rosés, rosés with character, fresh red wines, as well as elegant blanc de noirs. In just a few years the region and this grape variety have shown their potential, their versatility, and the possibility of carrying out R&D (Research and Development) with them. There are still few wineries who produce single variety wines using this grape, but most importantly, all of them have become aware of the obligation to enhance the uniqueness that defines the territory and the new style of wine to be imposed in the twenty-first century.
