Gorka Izagirre 42 Zura 2018 is a creamy white wine with intense aromas of ripe white and citrus fruits and notes of toasted bread and pastries from the time it spends in wood. On the palate it is powerful and unctuous with a fresh acidity. The mid-palate reveals tasty ripe apple, tropical fruits and citrus notes with hints of butter and toast.

Gorka Izagirre 42 Zura is a barrel-aged white wine made by Txacolí Gorka Izagirre with the Hondarribi Zerratia variety in the Bizkaiko Txakolina denomination (Basque Country).

This winery is the food and wine project of an entire family, founded by Gorka Izagirre in 2005 in the Biscayan town of Llarrabetzu, with the aim of promoting Bizcaia dishes and wines. Currently, his son Bertol is in charge of management and his nephew Eneko Atxa is in charge of the two restaurants, one of which, Arzurmendi, has been awarded three Michelin stars. In the winery they produce quality white wines with the area’s native varieties such as Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia. Unique and distinctive Txacolís with an international reputation.

Gorka Izagirre 42 Zura comes from 3 hectares of vineyards located on steep slopes facing the sun and in ventilated areas. These are strains with an average age of 15 years old that are cultivated using traditional agriculture, and production is limited to 6,000 kg per hectare. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is harvested manually.

In the winery, the Gorka Izagirre 42 Zura must ferments in a 5,000-litre French oak vat with selected yeasts and at a constant temperature of 14ºC. Then, it is allowed to age with its fine lees with daily batonnage for 10 months. Finally it is left to mature in the bottle before being sold.

Gorka Izagirre 42 Zura is a barrel-aged white wine designed to enjoy with good food. A barrel-aged Txacolí that has body, intensity and sophistication.

The truth is that for many centuries, nobody gave txakolí wine serious consideration, and very few mourned its disappearance. Compared to powerful wines with a higher alcohol content, txakolí was considered a ‘little’ local wine (‘vinillo’) of little interest. For a long time, a wine’s alcohol content was its only introduction. There were periods where still very poor production methods had not allowed the varieties to speak for themselves, and what’s more, txakolí forms part of a family economy at the same home-grown level as meat, milk and fish. In addition, the txacolí industry has not been advanced or prepared enough to rigorously produce this small oenological joy until the last few decades.
