Characteristics G.D. Vajra Barbera D'Alba
G.D. Vajra Barbera D'Alba is a single-variety red wine made by G.D. Vajra with the Barbera variety in the DOC Barbera d'Alba Italian denomination in Piedmont.
GD Vajra is a family winery founded in 1972 and located in the western part of the commune of Barolo, in the town of Vergne. Their 40 hectares of vineyards are located in the highest part of Piedmont. These vines lie 400 metres above sea level and give the wines a very particular freshness and acidity.
GD Vajra Barbera D'Alba is made mostly with the oldest Barbera vines in the family. They were planted by the great-grandfather in 1949, they are low-yielding strains cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture that seeks to maintain the natural balance of the terroir and the vine. Due to the altitude of the vineyards and the variety’s thick skin, these grapes ripen very slowly and they are the last to be harvested.
When the G.D. Vajra Barbera D'Alba grapes reach the winery, they ferment at a temperature below 32ºC for about 30-40 days in stainless steel tanks. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine ages in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 to 28 months. Finally, it rests in the bottle for a few months before being sold.
G.D. Vajra Barbera D'Alba is a very exciting and fresh red wine. A true Barbera that is full of personality and has a surprisingly incredible aging potential over the years.
