Flor de Muga Blanco 2018 is a creamy and complex white wine, made with Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Maturana Blanca. On the nose, it has stand-out notes of green apple, grapefruit, white flowers and stone fruits, like peaches. A touch of vanilla comes from the wood. Steel tanks, clay or wooden jars... There are various different methods and materials that can be used to age wine, but they all have the same aim: to ensure that after fermentation, the wine develops its characteristics and reaches the highest possible quality.

What the Romans began doing in clay jars led to a process where oak barrels have become the tool of choice for several reasons: their elasticity, resistance to leaks and resistance to microbial development. But beware! It can’t be just any oak: it always has to be the best quality oak that grows both in America (in the states of Missouri and Virginia), and in France (Trocais, Allier, Nerves and Bertranges).

These last two areas are where Bodegas Muga get their barrels from, using them to age Flor de Muga Blanco for 6 months. This white wine is made in the D.O.Ca La Rioja, in the Barrio de La Estación, Haro, in Rioja Alta.

Before the Flor de Muga Blanco is aged, is goes through a process that begins with a manual harvest. After macerating in the press, where only the free-run juice is used (which is produced naturally through gravity), Flor de Muga Blanco ferments at a low temperature in oak barrels. After that, it is transferred to the oeufs de beaune, oval-shaped concrete vats, where it spends 3 months on fine lees. Finally, after half a year in French oak barrels, it finishes off with 18 months in the bottle, where it becomes more refined and rounded.

This all results in a wine with body and structure and a traditional Burgundy style. The best introduction to aged white Riojas.

Muga is one of those few wineries in Rioja that has managed to combine the most absolute family tradition with a renewed vision of the future. This has allowed them to maintain the unique character and personality of their wines. In addition, it is one of the few wineries in La Rioja that uses oak wood from its own cooperage in all the stages of the production and the ageing processes. An exemplary winery, and one of the most prestigious ones in La Rioja. Since the very beginning, harvest after harvest, it makes wine with the family seal: “Muga style”.
