Vino da Tavola (Piedmont)
Fabio Gea Cul Otte is a natural, barrel-aged red wine made by Fabio Gea with the Nebbiolo native variety in Piedmont (Italy).
Fabio Gea is one of the funniest and most provocative winemakers in Piedmont, working small plots in Barbaresco that he inherited from his grandfather. Although in his time, his grandfather cultivated more than 200 varieties in the Bricco area, they were not vinified until Fabio arrived on the scene. He left his job as a geologist and began to add his own touch to the half-abandoned vineyards.
Fabio Gea Cul Otte comes from old vines that are cultivated with the utmost care to preserve the natural balance of the terroir. All work in the vineyard is manual, using minimal copper and sulphur treatments and no systematic chemicals. The harvest is not carried out until the grape is well ripened.
In the winery, Fabio also works traditionally and experimentally, including making his own porcelain and glass amphoras for the vinification of Fabio Gea Cul Otte. For aging, he uses 440 litre and 500 litre older wooden barrels. The wine is sold in bottles with a very unique design and it is neither filtered nor clarified.
Fabio Gea Cul Otte is a wine made with Piedmont’s reigning variety that breaks all the patterns of traditional Barolos and Barbarescos. An unconventional but very pleasant Nebbiolo.
