Usuaran is a red wine from the Navarra D.O region. It is produced by Emilio Valerio, a winery founded en 1980, whose objective was biodynamic farming of excellence with as little intervention possible.

This wine is a Garnacha. These grapes are from ‘El Palomar’ vineyards, situated 550 metres above sea level, as well as other vineyards such as La Abejera, Santosma,Villaplana and El Monte. Some of the vines are over 60 years old.

As for the winemaking, each variety is vinified seperately. After treading of the grapes, Grenache is fermented. The Tempranillo and Graciano grapes are macerated for between 20 and 28 days in wooden tanks. The ageing process is also done seperately, which lasts for 14 months in French Oak barrels.

Some wine regions have to bear the weight of their own prestige and fame, and this is certainly the case for Navarra. For many years, the white and reds produced in this region came second to the rosés produced here with the noble Grenacha variety. However, the last two decades have seen ongoing changes in the wine-making sector in Navarra, changes which have completely transformed the styles of wine produced and have been consistently worthwhile, resulting in  some of the white and red wines produced in Navarra being ranked among best rated in Spain.
