Beaujolais is a small French wine region that sits to the south of Burgundy and north of Lyon. The region’s most popular wine is Beaujolais Nouveau, a young, fresh and fruity wine that is popular all around the world. At the same time, there are some local producers working hard to make more complex and long-living wines. Wines that are still made through the traditional carbonic maceration method, but come from the region’s prestigious crus. The most famous crus are the AOC Moulin-à-Vent, AOC Morgon and AOC Fleurie. The latter, as its name suggests, is a floral burst that gives rise to the most aromatic and elegant Beaujolais wines. One good example of these wines is Domaine des Nugues Fleurie.
Made by Domaine des Nugues, a family winery set up in 1976 that has contributed to the rebirth of Beaujolais wines, this red wine is made from the Gamay variety from vines aged about 45 years old planted in sandy-granite and granite soils. These vines are cultivated using sustainable agriculture and great care is taken to maintain the natural balance of the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand and once they reach the winery, the best fruit is selected. They then undergo a carbonic maceration with controlled temperatures for 12-20 days. Finally the wine ages in vats for 7 months and then 18 months in bottles.
The people behind Domaine des Nugues, Gerard and his son Gilles, have managed to showcase in their Domaine des Nugues Fleurie wine the amazing potential of this small and endearing cru by distancing themselves from market trends. A delicate Fleurie that is harmonious and very gourmet.
Domaine des Nugues Fleurie 2018 is a smooth red wine with aromas of red and black fruits accompanied by spicy notes. On the palate it is broad, rich and flavoursome. A red wine with a very supple entry, fine, persistent tannins and superb length.
