Demencia is a red wine from the D.O Bierzo produced by the Demencia de Autor winery. This is a single variety wine made with the Mencía grape.

The grapes used for this wine come from 25 plots which between them occupy just over 3 hectares of land. The vineyards are home to sandy loam soils. The local climate, however, changes between Atlantic and continental influences: the winters experience heavy rainfall which gives way to a fresh spring. Summer, however, is extremely dry, although scattered showers occur which favour the maturation of the grapes at the vineyard.

The harvest is carried out manually and are transported to the winery in small amounts, ensuring that the bunches are not damaged and the grapes arrive at the winery in the best possible condition. At the winery, the grapes are left to ferment spontaneously with native yeasts before undergoing pre-fermative maceration for 2 days and maceration (post-fermative) for another 72 hours. The fermentation process finishes in barrels, where various pump-overs take place, as well as a final spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

Demencia is then finally left to age for between 13 and 15 months in French oak barrels and refines in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then bottled after having been stabilised naturally.

The Demencia de Autor winery is led by the agricultural engineer Nacho León, who specialises in working with the Mencía grape variety. The winery produces their wines in limited quantities, all of which come from old vineyards home to unique soils with special characteristics.

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
