De Trafford Petit Verdot is a single-variety Petit Verdot red wine produced by the De Trafford winery in Coastal Region, South Africa.
The De Trafford family winery is located in the beautiful Mont Fleur estate, at the top of a valley over the Stellenbosch region where the Trafford family started with a grazing farm but then realised that the high-altitude slopes where they were located would be suitable for growing grapes. After years of learning and winemaking advice mainly from the Bordeaux region, David Trafford and his wife Rita began bottling their first wines in 1994.
The clusters used to make the De Trafford Petit Verdot wine are harvested by hand and when they reach the winery, they are all destemmed and manually squeezed directly into open tanks where they ferment with their native yeasts and the “cap” is perforated twice a day. Once fermentation has finished, the wine is transferred to casks where malolactic fermentation takes place.
De Trafford Petit Verdot ages for 30 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
