Château Grange Cochard Le Plateau 2020 is a smooth red wine with attractive aromas of red fruit, notes of violet flowers and spicy hints of black pepper. On the palate it is fresh, silky and well structured. A light-bodied wine with dominant acidity, round, fine tannins and impeccable texture.
Admittedly, being too ambitious can be dangerous. However, when ambition is focussed on trying to do things better, not giving up, persevering and not throwing your hands up at the first setback or obstacle, it is definitely positive. In the case of Jean-Philippe Manchès, a lover of Beaujolais, it is thanks to this ambition that he has transformed an old estate into a true jewel of OAC Morgon. Château Grange Cochard contains a majestic château, 8 hectares of land and terroirs worthy of showcasing, and this is clear to see in each of their wines.
Their Château Grange Cochard Le Plateau is a red wine made from a selection of Gamay grapes. A 70 year old vineyard located just opposite the Château Grange Cochard with soil composed of sandy, granitic and slate deposits. Viticulture is in the process of converting to organic and the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness in small 18-20 kg bins. Once they reach the winery, the grapes undergo a traditional semi-carbonic maceration without crushing and a careful extraction. Then the wine ages in used oak barrels for 10 months.
All the energy that has gone into an estate with a reputation for having some of the best terroirs in the AOC Morgon is served on a platter (“la plateau” in French) in this Château Grange Cochard Le Plateau. A rare gem where the energy of the granite and slate slopes remains intact.
