Castaño Rosado is a rosé wine from the D.O Yecla produced by the Castaño winery. This is a single variety wine made with the Monastrell grape variety, the most cultivated variety in the region.
The stark contrasts of temperature in the region, especially between summer and winter, is excellent for the maturation and development of the grapes at the vineyards. Rainfall is scarce, although occasional downpours occur once and a while, with the sun as a constant factor throughout the year.
The grapes used come from a vineyard located 750 metres above sea level, with a north-south orientation. The vineyards are home to stone and chalk soils, and vines that are over three decades old with a density of 1600 vines per hectare. The vines at the winery are goblet-pruned.
Once the grapes have been harvested, they are transported to the wineries facilities, where they are pressed. Following this, without undergoing maceration, the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature of 16ºC. Castaño Rosado is then bottled and cold stabilised without being aged.
Castaño is a pioneering winery in the D.O Yecla. In 1985, the winery bucked the trend of bulk producing wines, by becoming the first winery in the region to start selling bottled wine. The Castaño winery has enjoyed great success abroad, with 90% of production exported outside of Spain.
