Cantocuerdas Moscatel Seco is a white wine produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Bernabeleva in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, D.O. Vinos de Madrid.

In 1923, Dr Vicente Álvarez-Villamil bought the farm Bernabeleva, in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. For decades, his heirs have carefully looked after the old vines that he planted, in a respectful way and in balance with nature. They were planted with the aim of making honest, quality wines in the future.

Bernabeleva works in an organic or biodynamic way with 35 hectares of old vineyards, planted on hillsides, foothills and alluvial soils, between 600 and 830 metres of altitude. The soils are comprised of weathered granite, with scarce nutrients and with different depths.

Wines from Bernabeleva express a wide range of nuances, as the different vegetations, the diversity of climates and the different kinds of soils, have a clear impact on the end product. These wines are always made with native varieties, such as Grenache, Albillo or Muscatel.

Cantocuerdas Moscatel Seco is a wine made from Muscatel with small berries form a vineyard that is 70 years old, planted at 7920 metres of altitude in San Martín de Valdeiglesias.

The grapes are manually harvested and placed in 12-kg boxes. Once they arrive at the winery, the grapes are cooled to favour the pre-fermentation maceration and a slower extraction. The fermentation with native yeasts takes place in French oak barrels, where the wine also ages for 9 months.

Cantocuerdas Moscatel Seco is a soft, fresh and pleasant wine. Aromas of flowers and fresh grass stand out. In the mouth it is easy to drink and very honest. Only 500 bottles.

Although Madrid wines (Vinos de Madrid) are still relatively unknown among consumers, the region has enjoyed a prestige and historical past that dates back to the twelfth century. Current wines in the region however are far from the old wines of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, who in their golden years were perceived as some of the most prestigious wines in Spain. Today, the Vinos of Madrid face a highly competitive wine scene, but the effort local wineries regain this old prestige is evident in the quality of the wines being produced.
