On the website of Cantina Marilina, a winery in the Noto Valley, in the Syracuse region (southeastern Sicily), there are no wine pairing recommendations. “We never suggest a pairing with this or that recipe, we won’t tell you about touches and flavours. Our wines are freedom! We rely more on the emotions that a glass of wine can evoke than on pairings.” This is the personal vision of wine championed by winemaker Angelo Paternó, owner of the winery and winemaker, who after more than forty years of experience chose “to be different by vocation” in 2001.
Since then, he has been accompanied in his work by daughter Marilina, producing authentic wines with a strong identity and a strong link to the territory, like Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico. Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico is a white wine from the I.G.T. Terre Siciliane, made with Grecanico. This white grape, the sixth most planted in the country, is native, located mainly in the north. However, this variety also ripens perfectly in the area’s white limestone soils, which bring refinement, elegance and longevity to these wines.
The grapes, grown on trellises in the Contrada San Lorenzo vineyard, are harvested by hand in September and brought to the winery in 10 kg crates. The vinification of Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico is carried out in concrete tanks, with long macerations and minimal intervention. Before being released, Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico spends 6 months aging in stainless steel tanks and 3 months in the bottle. Without filtration or clarification, Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico is bottled in recycled glass bottles with natural cork stoppers.
The best conditions for listening to this father and daughter, forgetting about pairings and enjoying all the sensations of the Grecanico!
Cantina Marilina Sketta Grecanico 2020 is a creamy white wine. The nose is intense, with floral and citrus aromas. On the palate it is flavoursome and fresh. Long and persistent finish, with hints of bitter almond.
