Recommendations for a victorious August

The months of the year are named after the gods and emperors of ancient Rome. August comes from Augustus, who is thought to be the first Roman emperor. In fact, it was he who chose this month as the one named after him, because this was when he defeated Cleopatra and Mark Antony, his greatest enemies. So, a month with victory in the air and for many, the hottest and most idle time of year. This month we’ve put together a selection of wines to drink almost without noticing.

5 of the best wines for an idle August

Cune Imperial Reserva

CVNE, a traditional Rioja winery, is a safe bet if you have lots of different guests. You can’t go wrong with Cune Imperial Reserva, a coupage of Tempranillo, Mazuela and Graciano, which is only made in years when the harvest is considered excellent. But serve it in pride of place alongside your main course of red meat, a roast or even game, and its 24 months aging in French oak barrels will really shine.

Fedellos do Couto Conasbrancas

This wine is made by four young winegrowers who are champions of the rural environment and traditional agriculture. Under the name Fedellos, meaning ‘naughty’ in Galician, they have stepped out to reveal a new side to the D.O. Ribeira Sacra. Made with the native Godello, Doña Blanca and Treixadura varieties, this is a full-bodied white wine that is both fresh and saline. Pure summer pleasure!

Le Coste Litrozzo Rosato

If anyone knows how to enjoy the “dolce vita”, it’s the Romans. And what better way to do so than with a rosé from Lucio. Produced by Le Coste, a project run by a couple who champion free and holistic work in the vineyard and in the winery, this is a refreshing coupage of the native Aleatico, Merlot, Procanico and Sangiovese varieties. Sold in a 1 litre bottle, this wine will keep people happy for even longer.

Las Encinas 2018

El Bierzo always brings light and smooth wines for your best summer dishes. It is also made by two greats, Rául Pérez, considered the best winemaker in Spain, and Alain Graillot, son of a great figure who put Crozes-Hermitage on the map. Need we say more? Now you have a great wine for the summer in front of you. A single-variety Mencía from hundred-year-old vines planted on granitic and clay soils, this wine is pure minerality.

L'Enclòs de Peralba Pét-Nat 2020

Last but not least, a pétillant naturel in the summer is always a winner. Fresh, light and sparkling, this will help you make the most of your summer evenings. Made by the sixth generation at Gramona, a legendary sparkling wine house in Penedès (Catalonia), this is an ancient single-variety Malvasía from Sitges with a highly addictive lively acidity and freshness. Immediate enjoyment for any time.

We don’t know if you’re one of the lucky ones going on holiday this month or whether you’ll be at work. But what we do know for sure is that, with these August recommendations, you’re sure to have a great month.
