How many calories are there in a glass of wine?

Temperatures are rising and with that comes the desire to wear fewer layers. And this is the time when lots of people decide it would be good to lose a few pounds. If you’re in the middle of getting a “beach bod”, you’ve probably thought about drinking less alcohol. However, do you know exactly how many calories a glass of wine contains? How many calories does a glass of wine contain?

There is a simple answer. A glass of wine contains approximately 125 calories. That is the same amount of calories as two apples, a glass of milk or a can of tuna. However, this varies a little depending on the type of wine. It all depends on the residual sugar content.

To understand this, we need to look at how the wine is made. We have to think about alcoholic fermentation, the process where yeasts feed on carbohydrates from the grapes and convert this fructose and glucose into alcohol. The sugars that don’t finish fermenting, the residual sugars, are the carbohydrates that remain in the wine. Therefore, the drier the wine, the less carbohydrates it will have. On the other hand, sweet wines will contain a higher amount of sugar and, therefore, more calories (between 120 and 190 Kcal.). Then distilled beverages like whisky, vodka and rum, don’t contain any carbohydrates when enjoyed neat.

Does wine make you fat?

Nothing is good in excess. However, contrary to what many people may think, calories are not always our enemy. These are what provide us with our everyday energy and we wouldn’t be able to live without them. The question of whether they make us fat or not all depends on the way our body processes them. Recent studies have shown that a glass of wine a day increases basal metabolism, which means it causes the calories we consume to be immediately converted into energy, without being stored in the body as fat. So, given all of this, a glass of wine a day is very good for us, not just for the soul, but for the body as well. But that’s not all...

The health benefits of wine are well known by the scientific community. Everyone knows how good red wine is for our hearts. Its high concentration of polyphenols and vitamin E are great for keeping blood and blood vessels clean. This is essential in preventing heart disease in the long term. And according to the World Health Organization, wine contains resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that reduces LDL cholesterol levels. This is the bad cholesterol that health professionals recommend reducing for optimal and long-lasting health.

But if we’re going to talk about the benefits of wine, we have to think about more than just the physical benefits. It’s obvious that wine makes us happier, not just because we enjoy drinking it, but also because of its ability to increase endorphins, the natural substance that our body generates to make us feel good and that helps to avoid stress, anxiety and other mental health problems that, unfortunately, are becoming more common. In short, in a hurried world full of obligations and duties, stopping and enjoying a glass of wine is priceless. Wine is, without doubt, 125 calories very well used.
