Biu Blanc is white wine from the D.O. Costers del Segre produced by the Batlliu de Sort winery. This wine is a blend of two different grape varieties: Riesling (85%) and Viognier (15%).

The grapes are grown on vineyards at altitudes about 900 metres above sea level, from four different farms owned by the winery; Les Lleres, La Plana, L’Envista and La Cabanera. The grapes for Biu Blanc grow influenced by a climate of the high mountains, which is characterised by its low temperatures. The vineyards are cultivated and worked organically, although the winery is not yet certified.

After the harvest has been carried out, the grapes for Biu Blanc are left to ferment in (maximum capacity 230litre) stainless steel tanks. The stabilisation process, as well as the vinification and winemaking processes, as carried out using natural methods. Before being bottled, Biu Blanc ages for 10 months together with its lees in stainless steel tanks.

Batlliu de Sort was founded in 2007, coinciding with the first planting of Pinot Noir by the winery in Barreró. The love for wine and for the Pallars region has been the driving force behind the winery.

As the winery has said, “Amamos al Pallars, al Pirineo, al vino... y a la madre que nos parió."(We love the Pallars, the Pyrenees, the wine ... and the mother who bore us)

When we refer to the DO Costers del Segre we think of wines with a continental character, which in some respects is true, but extensive replantation of international grape varieties means that the majority of wines produced here lack a geographical or territorial trademark, even though the vast majority of the wines are technologically perfect. However, there are currently wineries such as Mas Blanch i Jové, Costers del Sio, L’Olivera, Lagravera and Thomas Cusiné, among others, who concentrate their effors on producing wines with what are considered varieties native to the region. However, the majority of this region is still dominated by classic international varieties.
