Birichino Besson Vineyard Grenache Old Vines 2018 is a smooth red wine with aromas of candied ripe fruit, notes of rose water and carnations and hints of liquorice and rusty earth. On the palate it is flavoursome, light and very mineral. A complete but simple wine with fine tannins and bright acidity. The finish is long with hints of gravel and river stones.

Birichino Besson Vineyard Grenache Old Vines is an ecological, wood-aged red wine made by Birichino with the Garnacha variety in the Santa Cruz mountains, in California (USA).

Alex Krause and John Locke, two great winemakers who have worked in vineyards in California, Italy and France, founded Birichino in 2008 with the aim of producing delicious wines that bring joy and revitalise the soul. To do this, they start from carefully cultivated vineyards and minimal intervention vinification.

Birichino Besson Vineyard Grenache Old Vines comes from various family-owned vineyards dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. These are high quality old vines, some of which are over 100 years old. They are cultivated using completely ecological agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.

In the winery, a small percentage of the Birichino Besson Vineyard Grenache Old Vines grapes rest in small boxes for approximately 10 days before destemming and then they undergo a 6-week maceration on their skins. All the grapes then undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and then the wine ages in used French oak barrels for 10 months.

Made by the Birichino winery, which means mischievous in Italian, Birichino Besson Vineyard Grenache Old Vines is a very mineral and slightly spicy wine of surprising character. A very charming ‘rogue’.
