Tasting notes

Red wine Aged in wood Biodynamic, Organic and Respectful agriculture. 18 months in French oak barrels and concrete deposits.

Benoît Ente Mathilde 2020 is a dark, complex and full-bodied red wine. On the nose, we find various fruits (redcurrant, raspberry) that combine with hints of leather. The palate is tender and silky, lush and unctuous. Flavoursome acidity. Very seductive. The grapes for this red were harvested in early August.

About Benoît Ente Mathilde

Its name, recognised worldwide, is inextricably linked with great white chardonnay wines. You may even be familiar with his last name (his brother is the famed Arnaud Ente); however, don't let this limit you, as Benoît Ente is also a great master of red winemaking. Although these wines make up the smallest part of his production, Benoît Ente has a go at pinot noir and the Bourgogne AOC at Benoît Ente Mathilde.

Originally from Burgundy, pinot noir is a variety capable of demonstrating the small differences that each of the crus of this region in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, south of Burgundy (in central-eastern France). Benoît Ente Mathilde is a cuvée where two plots are blended: Les Champans (planted in 1975) and Les Femelottes (from 1998). Both bring together new and old ancestors with the current owners of this company, founded in the last century, which Benoît and his aunt took over after the death of their grandparents in 1990. Deep limestone soils are mixed with loams, silts and clays in this area. That was the year in which the path of this winegrower began, who started by selling grapes to other merchants and ended up surprising everyone in 2003 with his small production. Only about three hectares were needed. Today, Benoît Ente has doubled them, working a total of six hectares that are cultivated sustainably, without weeding or chemical fertilisation, always looking for the most environmentally-friendly methods. The grapes are harvested by hand, the first to be harvested in the area. This is mainly because the state of ripeness of the berries is a fundamental issue for Benoît Ente, who constantly monitors and checks them until the right moment arrives.

Benoît Ente Mathilde is carefully crafted, always seeking to achieve a refined wine. Extractions and pressing are usually very gentle, always achieving smooth extractions, with a quality must. After fermentation, which is carried out separately, Benoît Ente Mathilde will be aged for at least 18 months in both barrels and vats. During the first phase, which will last one year, each of the Benoît Ente Mathilde lots will rest in large French oak barrels. After this time, the assembly is done, and Benoît Ente Mathilde will enter vats once again, where it will stay for half a year. During this time, Benoît Ente Mathilde will be decanted and cleaned, avoiding fining and filtration.

Around the world, Benoît Ente is a name associated with great white chardonnay wines. However, within all this recognition, there is also a place for pinot noir.
